A photo of a tatooed bearded Viking warrior wielding a battle axe

'Escape the North' and sack, pillage and plunder. That is the battle cry of exiled Viking warriors. It is also the title of one of our warrior-themed Thunderbolt Casino slots. With a top prize of R75,000 you too can raid the reels and claim the booty - no swords or battle axes required!

What do the likes of Bjorn Ironside, Sigurd Snake in the Eye, Olav the Stout and Ivar the Boneless have in common? Well apart from their awesome names, they are all battle-hardened Viking warriors. These are the berserkers and the backbone of at least one of our high hit rate Thunderbolt Casino slots!

Thunderbolt Casino Slots for Warmongers

If you have an appetite for playing thrilling online casino games that can pay out plenty, we've got you covered. One of our featured Thunderbolt Casino slots may not be themed on Boers, Red Coats or Zulu warriors but it pays homage to the men and women who wield the spear and sword.

Here is a round-up of the most violent Viking warriors; the mighty bearded men who are the stuff of myths, legends and Icelandic sagas, like our very own General De La Rey!  Some are known to have existed for sure. Others are more a figment of fertile imaginations or cunning characters in Thunderbolt Casino slots!

Olav Haraldsson - Viking Warrior, King and Canonised Saint

Olav the Stout aka Olav Haraldsson was a mountain of a man and a marauder of note. Legend has it that he first wielded the Viking sword in battle at the age of 12 years. Holy Moley!

Such was his prowess that he soon became a Viking chieftain of ill repute. He and his men cleaved a path of destruction from the Baltic to Galicia in what is now Poland. During his rampage of terror, he put thousands of hapless enemies to the sword. Those he didn't slaughter, he enslaved or ransomed off for piles of (Kruger's) gold.

Hel and the Siege of Canterbury

Olav's bloody rampage progressed to England in around 1011 where he ransacked Canterbury and murdered the archbishop. His weapon of choice? A battle axe called 'Hel,' so named after the Norse goddess of death and the Underworld!

In a final act of defiance and using his longships as leverage, Olav the Stout pulled down London Bridge! Legend has it that his antics helped restore Ethelred the Unready to the English throne.

After amassing a small fortune in booty, Olav returned to Norway where he was crowned King. His reign ended when he was killed in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. He was just 35 years old!

Today, King Olaf II of Norway is a national hero and canonised saint. His fabled battle axe, Hel, appears prominently on Norway's Coat of Arms. Olav's story is literally one of 'sinner to saint'.

Warriors in Thunderbolt Casino Slots Pay Out Rather Than Pillage!

The warriors in Thunderbolt Casino slots may look fierce and frightening but they are nothing remotely like Olav and his motley crew. Our Viking lookalikes either pay out in legal tender or represent some equally rewarding bonus feature! How is that for karmic intervention and a kief intervention at that?

Sigurd Snake in the Eye - The Unlikely Viking

Reputed to be the stepson of the notorious Viking king Ragnar Lodbrok, Sigurd was born with a defect in one eye. The mark allegedly resembled that of an ouroboros; a coiled serpent biting its own tail. Hence the name Sigurd Snake in the Eye!

Sigurd was still a youngster when he heard the news of his stepfather's grisly death in a snake pit in England. He and his brother Bjorn Ironside swore vengeance. Together they quickly assembled an army of Viking warriors and set out on their longships.

A Trail of Destruction Through Europe

On reaching England, they slaughtered King Aella and sacked, pillaged and set fire to every town they came across. Sigurd duly snatched the king's daughter, Princess Heluna and took her as his wife. The group then went on to Normandy, France and Lombardy, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

After several years of murderous mayhem, Sigurd Snake in the Eye returned to Scandinavia. The young Viking claimed the throne of Denmark where he reigned from 873 to 885.

Gory Death in Battle

When Sigurd was booted off the throne, he set off to France and then later Belgium and North Germany, fighting fierce battles along the way. Unsurprisingly, Sigurd died in battle in 891 along with hundreds of thousands of other warriors.

Was Sigurd Snake in the Eye a real Viking? The truth is no-one really knows - and that is what makes the saga all the more fascinating!

How Thunderbolt Casino Slots Deliver the Spoils

We have covered two Viking warriors with a remarkable lust for blood. How about the Thunderbolt Casino slots. What do they deliver in terms of real money spoils?

Escape the North Slot Machine

With two types of wilds that pack a payout punch and wins of up to R75k, Escape the North is the Drikus of this warrior-based Thunderbolt Casino slot. The 243 win way online game has a bonus bet and buy feature to up the ante. If that is not enough to keep you hot on the button, listen up.

The themed symbols pay between 10 x and 20 x the base bet for five of a kind. Do the sums and that is R50 to R100 bucks on the board - but not Eland or Kudu, mind you. Throw in sticky wilds that trigger cascading respins with progressive multipliers and you've got a cracking Thunderbolt Casino slot.

That is not all folks. Escape the North has a second wild that unleashes up to four respins on the board. As we have alluded to, you can buy one of two sequences of free games. That, Bolters, is where the 15,000 x top award is lurking about - a bit like Bjorn, Sigurd and Olav the Stout!

  • High volatility
  • 2 x wilds
  • Respins

Primal Warriors: Legacy Online Slot

The fighting men and women in Primal Warriors: Legacy Slot resemble early hominids rather than Vikings. That said, they and the rest of the themed icons still deliver plenty of dosh on the reels. What do we mean by plenty?

Regular prizes range between 300 x and 400 x the bet per line. When the maximum stake is in the machine, that converts to R1,500 to R2,000 in fresh, wrinkle-free Randela! Now that is smaaklik, hle kakhulu and as dope as dope can be!

What makes Primal Warriors: Legacy a shoo-in for the best warrior-themed Thunderbolt Casino slots category? How about a hold and spin feature? In this sequence of free play, only bonus symbols, jackpot symbols and blanks are on the grid.

Grab Up to 1,000 x in the Hold and Spin Feature

Here is how the hold and win feature works. During regular play, six or more bonus symbols on the board ignite the free round. The new gaming interface appears and the reels spin. The feature continues for as long as there is at least one new symbol dropping on the grid.

At the end of the round, you are awarded the sum total of all the instant cash prizes and/or jackpots corresponding to each symbol that has dropped. If you happen to fill all the reels with symbols, you are awarded the Grand Jackpot fixed at 1,000 x your stake!

Scatters activate 5, 7 or 10 free games where oversized symbols deliver payline wins and add extra spins to the round. If you think that is coolio, this online casino game has a hypothetical top prize of 75,000 x the bet per line. That, people, is up to R375,000 when playing with the highest available stake!

Key Features of Primal Warrior: Legacy Slot

  • 25 fixed paylines
  • Medium volatility
  • Free games
  • Oversized symbols
  • Hold and Win feature
